Tank labels are rounded marketing numbers. The table below lists the most common nominal aquarium sizes, their typical interior dimensions, the real water volume you can expect in a planted or stocked setup, and the approximate filled weight. Why the label and the real volume differ

Manufacturers quote a nominal capacity measured as if the tank were filled to the absolute brim with nothing inside. In practice four things quietly eat that space:

  • Freeboard — you keep the water level below the rim.
  • Substrate — a 2-inch bed of gravel or sand displaces a surprising amount.
  • Hardscape — driftwood and rock push out more water than most people budget for.
  • Equipment — heaters, filters, and reactors all take up room.

The result is that a labelled 29 gallon tank with a typical setup often holds closer to 23-26 gallons of actual water. That gap matters for dosing, stocking, and heater sizing. Footprint matters as much as volume

Two tanks can hold the same gallons and feel completely different. A 20 gallon long (30 × 12 inches) gives schooling fish a much longer swimming lane than a 20 gallon high (24 × 12 inches), even though both hold the same water. When you're choosing between standard sizes, look at the footprint first:

  • Long / wide tanks — better surface area for gas exchange, more swimming room, preferred by most community species.
  • Tall / high tanks — same water, less floor-space footprint, but weaker gas exchange and less comfortable for mid-water schoolers.
  • Breeder tanks — extra depth front-to-back (18 inches vs 12) gives more aquascaping room and a wider viewing window.

Common confusions

  • "30 gallon" vs "30B" — the Breeder is deeper (36 × 18 × 12) and holds about the same water as a 29 gallon, but the footprint is wider and shorter, which changes what fits inside.
  • "20 gallon Long" vs "20 gallon High" — same nominal volume, very different footprint. Long is almost always the better community tank.
  • Bowfront and cylinder sizes — these are listed by their rectangular equivalent in most marketing. A 36 gal bowfront is roughly equivalent to a 36 gallon rectangular in footprint but holds slightly more water because of the curved front panel.
  • Euro brands and litres — tanks sold in Europe, Asia, and Australia are labelled in litres. A 200L tank is roughly 52.8 US gallons. Use the liters ↔ gallons converter when comparing across regions.

Why does my 20 gallon long and 20 gallon high hold different amounts?
They're marketed as the same nominal size but the dimensions differ: a 20 Long is roughly 30 × 12 × 12 inches, while a 20 High is roughly 24 × 12 × 16 inches. The Long has more surface area and swimming room; the High has more vertical height for tall aquascapes. Both hold close to 20 gallons gross, but the Long typically gives you slightly more net water because the shallower profile means less hardscape displacement.
Are aquarium size labels accurate?
Only roughly. The nominal size is a brim-full gross estimate, and actual water volume after substrate, hardscape, and freeboard is usually 10-15% lower. How do I convert litres to gallons for a tank bought in Europe?
Divide litres by 3.785 to get US gallons, or multiply by 0.264. European tanks are sold by litre capacity measured to the brim, so the same 10-15% displacement gap applies. A 200L tank is about 52.8 US gallons gross; expect closer to 45-48 gallons net in a typical setup. What's the difference between a 30 gallon and a 30 gallon Breeder?
A standard 30 gallon is roughly 36 × 12 × 16 inches, while a 30 gallon Breeder is 36 × 18 × 12 inches — the same footprint width and roughly the same water, but the Breeder is deeper front-to-back and shorter in height. That extra depth makes it the hobby's classic all-rounder for aquascaping and breeding pairs. Both hold close to 30 gallons gross, but the Breeder's wider footprint changes what species and layouts suit it.
Do bowfront tanks really hold more water than a rectangle of the same length?
Yes, a little. The curved front panel adds roughly 20-25% to the effective average depth compared with a flat panel of the same length and rear depth. A 36-inch bowfront labelled 46 gallons holds noticeably more than a 36-inch rectangular tank of similar height because the curve bulges the water column outward at the front. How heavy is a full aquarium compared to furniture?
Heavier than most people expect. A filled 55 gallon commonly lands between 600 and 700 pounds once water, glass, substrate, and stand are included — roughly the weight of a large sofa concentrated onto a 4-square-foot footprint. A 125 gallon can exceed 1,400 pounds. Always check the floor and stand before filling, especially on an upper floor or over joist spans.
