Start with real water volume, not the label
Stocking density is always judged against net volume — the water actually in the glass after substrate, rocks, and equipment displace their share. A labelled 20 gallon tank with a two-inch substrate bed and a piece of driftwood often holds closer to 17 gallons. The one-inch-per-gallon rule: when it works and when it fails
The classic guideline says one inch of adult fish per US gallon of water. As a very rough first filter for small community species it's not useless — but it ignores everything that actually kills fish:
- Body mass and waste — a single 6-inch oscar produces far more waste than six 1-inch neon tetras, yet both total six inches.
- Adult size — buying fish at pet size ignores that most grow 2–4× larger.
- Temperament and territory — aggressive or highly active species need room to establish territories.
- Schooling biology — tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and danios must be kept in groups of six or more to behave normally.
- Filtration and maintenance — turnover and water-change discipline change how much bioload a tank carries.

Realistic stocking for a 10 gallon nano tank
Nano tanks are the most common entry point and the most common regret. A 10 gallon leaves almost no margin for error, so species choice matters more than it does in larger tanks:

A 10 gallon nano works best as a single-species display or a very light community. Every inch of fish you add consumes a larger share of the total capacity than it would in a 55 gallon. Realistic stocking for a 20 gallon tank
A 20 gallon long or high is a superb community tank. With good filtration and weekly 20–25% water changes, a sensible small-species plan looks like:

Realistic stocking for a 30 gallon tank
The 30 gallon breeder footprint (36 × 18 inches) is the hobby's classic all-rounder and opens up slightly bigger centrepiece options:

A 55 gallon (48 × 12 inches of footprint) holds a serious community or a few medium fish. Because it's a 12-inch-deep tank, focus on mid-water and bottom species; this is the size where careful planning really pays off:

That plan typically lands at 30–40 fish across 4–5 species — a full, active community that still respects adult sizes and group requirements. A 55 gallon is not a home for oscars or adult goldfish; both need far more water per fish than the rail-tank footprint suggests.
Realistic stocking for a 75 gallon and larger tank
Once you cross 75 gallons, the rules change less and the options open up. A 75 gallon (48 × 18 × 21) is the smallest tank where a single large fish such as an Oscar, Jack Dempsey, or a small group of African cichlids becomes realistic. It also suits medium-sized community plans that would feel cramped in a 55:

Signs you're already overstocked
- Readable ammonia or nitrite at any time means the filter can't keep up.
- Nitrate climbing fast between changes, above roughly 40 ppm, is the earliest measurable warning.
- Fish gasping at the surface or crowding the filter outflow.
- New aggression, clamped fins, or a string of otherwise inexplicable disease outbreaks.
