How many fish can I keep in my tank?

"How many fish fit?" is the most asked question in the hobby, and the honest answer is: fewer than you think. This guide walks through the one-inch-per-gallon rule, why it only works as a rough start, and gives realistic stocking plans for the most common tank sizes — then hands you a calculator that does the bioload maths properly.

Start with real water volume, not the label

Stocking density is always judged against net volume — the water actually in the glass after substrate, rocks, and equipment displace their share. A labelled 20 gallon tank with a two-inch substrate bed and a piece of driftwood often holds closer to 17 gallons. The one-inch-per-gallon rule: when it works and when it fails

The classic guideline says one inch of adult fish per US gallon of water. As a very rough first filter for small community species it's not useless — but it ignores everything that actually kills fish:

  • Body mass and waste — a single 6-inch oscar produces far more waste than six 1-inch neon tetras, yet both total six inches.
  • Adult size — buying fish at pet size ignores that most grow 2–4× larger.
  • Temperament and territory — aggressive or highly active species need room to establish territories.
  • Schooling biology — tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and danios must be kept in groups of six or more to behave normally.
  • Filtration and maintenance — turnover and water-change discipline change how much bioload a tank carries.

Treat the inch rule as a ceiling test, then apply the species-level rules above. Realistic stocking for a 10 gallon nano tank

Nano tanks are the most common entry point and the most common regret. A 10 gallon leaves almost no margin for error, so species choice matters more than it does in larger tanks:

A 10 gallon nano works best as a single-species display or a very light community. Every inch of fish you add consumes a larger share of the total capacity than it would in a 55 gallon. If you're new to the hobby, a 20 gallon long gives you enough margin to absorb mistakes without crashing the cycle.

Realistic stocking for a 20 gallon tank

A 20 gallon long or high is a superb community tank. With good filtration and weekly 20–25% water changes, a sensible small-species plan looks like:

That mix totals roughly 10–15 fish plus shrimp in a 20 gallon — comfortably within a one-inch rule when you use adult sizes, and typical of a properly maintained community tank. Realistic stocking for a 30 gallon tank

The 30 gallon breeder footprint (36 × 18 inches) is the hobby's classic all-rounder and opens up slightly bigger centrepiece options:

Alternatively run it as a single-species showpiece — a large school of 15–20 rummy-nose or cardinal tetras is one of the most striking looks in the hobby, and stays comfortably within the inch rule.

Realistic stocking for a 55 gallon tank

A 55 gallon (48 × 12 inches of footprint) holds a serious community or a few medium fish. Because it's a 12-inch-deep tank, focus on mid-water and bottom species; this is the size where careful planning really pays off:

That plan typically lands at 30–40 fish across 4–5 species — a full, active community that still respects adult sizes and group requirements. A 55 gallon is not a home for oscars or adult goldfish; both need far more water per fish than the rail-tank footprint suggests.

Realistic stocking for a 75 gallon and larger tank

Once you cross 75 gallons, the rules change less and the options open up. A 75 gallon (48 × 18 × 21) is the smallest tank where a single large fish such as an Oscar, Jack Dempsey, or a small group of African cichlids becomes realistic. It also suits medium-sized community plans that would feel cramped in a 55:

Signs you're already overstocked

  • Readable ammonia or nitrite at any time means the filter can't keep up.
  • Nitrate climbing fast between changes, above roughly 40 ppm, is the earliest measurable warning.
  • Fish gasping at the surface or crowding the filter outflow.
  • New aggression, clamped fins, or a string of otherwise inexplicable disease outbreaks.

How many neon tetras can I keep in a 20 gallon tank?
A school of 8-10 neon tetras is comfortable in a 20 gallon and shows them at their best; a tight, larger school of 12-15 also stays within safe bioload if the rest of the stocking is light. Neons must be kept in groups of six or more or they become stressed and nip fins.
How many guppies can I keep in a 10 gallon tank?
A 10 gallon nano is tight for guppies. A small group of 3-4 males or 2-3 females is safer than a large mixed colony, because guppies breed quickly and a 10 gallon can become overstocked within weeks. If you want a breeding colony, start with a 20 gallon long instead.
How many betta fish can I keep together?
Only one male betta per tank. Male bettas are territorial and will fight to the death if housed together. Females can sometimes be kept in small groups in a heavily planted 20+ gallon tank with multiple sight breaks, but even that requires close watching. A 10 gallon with a single male betta and a few cherry shrimp is the most reliable nano setup.
Can I keep one Oscar in a 55 gallon tank?
Not as a permanent home. A single Oscar needs 75 gallons and typically more, because it is a large, heavy-waste, highly territorial fish that will outgrow a 55 gallon's footprint within a couple of years. If you're set on cichlids in a 55 gallon, choose dwarf species such as rams, apistos, or Kribensis instead.
How many goldfish can I keep in a 20 gallon tank?
A 20 gallon is too small for even one adult goldfish. Common and comet goldfish need 50+ gallons for the first fish and 20-30 additional gallons per fish. Fancy varieties such as orandas and ryukins are slightly smaller but still need at least 30 gallons for the first fish. If you want a 20 gallon community, stick with tropical community species instead.
How many corydoras do I need in my tank?
Corydoras are social and should be kept in groups of at least six, with eight or more preferred. A 20 gallon suits 6-8 pygmy or bronze corys; a 55 gallon can hold 8-10 larger species such as peppered or albino corys. They need a soft substrate — rough gravel damages their barbels over time.
Is the one-inch-per-gallon rule ever accurate?
It's a usable first filter for small community fish in standard tanks, but it systematically fails for large, messy, or territorial species and ignores body mass entirely. The stocking calculator on this site replaces it with a bioload estimate that accounts for filtration and system type.
Do schooling fish need a minimum group size?
Yes. Most schooling species (tetras, rasboras, danios, barbs, corydoras) behave and display properly only in groups of six or more, and many do better at 8-12. A lone schooling fish is a stressed fish that hides, loses colour, and often becomes a target.
How does saltwater stocking differ from freshwater?
Marine water holds less dissolved oxygen, reef fish are typically more territorial, and invertebrates are far less tolerant of ammonia and nitrite spikes. My fish look fine — do the numbers really matter?
Visible stress is a late symptom. Nitrate climbing quickly, algae you can't control, and recurring disease outbreaks often show up long before fish look obviously stressed. Bioload limits exist to keep water quality inside what your filtration and water changes can sustain week after week.
