What filter flow rate does my aquarium need?
A common guideline is four to six times tank turnover per hour, so a 50 gallon tank suits a filter rated around 250 gallons per hour. Planted tanks often run at the lower end to avoid disturbing CO₂ distribution, while messy, heavily stocked, or marine systems benefit from the higher end. The calculator reports a 5x recommendation as a starting point.
What is GPH and why does it matter?
GPH stands for gallons per hour and is the standard rating aquarium filter manufacturers use. It tells you how much water the pump can push through the filter media in an hour. Higher GPH means faster turnover, which keeps ammonia and nitrate lower — but only if the flow is gentle enough for your species and not so strong it creates a current stress.
Can I have too much filter flow?
Yes. A flow that's too strong stresses fish that prefer still water — bettas, guppies, and some community species will hide, clamp fins, or get swept into the outflow. Shrimp and delicate invertebrates are also at risk. If your filter's GPH is well above the recommended range, aim for a model with an adjustable flow rate or add a spray bar to diffuse the current.
How do I calculate filter turnover for my tank?
Turnover is the filter's rated GPH divided by the tank's water volume in gallons. A 200 GPH filter on a 40 gallon tank gives 5x turnover — the standard target. Divide your filter's GPH by your tank's actual net water volume to check whether your current setup is under, at, or above the recommended range.
Do planted tanks need less filter flow?
Not necessarily less total turnover, but gentler flow helps CO₂ and nutrients distribute evenly without blowing plants around. A 4x turnover with a spray bar or lily pipes is usually enough for a planted tank, whereas an unplanted community tank benefits from the full 5-6x to process more waste.
What's the difference between a hang-on-back filter and a canister for flow?
Hang-on-back filters are limited by the height they can lift water, so they suit tanks up to roughly 55 gallons and GPH ratings up to about 400. Canister filters sit below the tank and push more water through more media, making them the better choice for 75+ gallon tanks or any setup that needs high flow without clutter inside the tank.
